The CLLD LEADER program in the areas of Heraklion and Messara in Crete includes a multitude of actions with the main objectives of diversifying and strengthening the local economy, improving the competitiveness of businesses in the agri-food sector and, finally, improving the living conditions and quality of life of the local population.
For its third, bilingual edition, Lazy snail was asked to evolve the existing editorial language while accommodating a larger volume of projects, data and results. The aim was to create a publication that was structured and easy to navigate, while remaining approachable and connected to the people and places behind the program.
A new series of illustrations was created to introduce each chapter, using scenes that reflect the themes, places and activities explored throughout the publication. Seen from a bird’s-eye perspective, the illustrations place the reader in the position of an observer, looking across Cretan landscapes, agriculture, the Agency’s offices, projects and program results. Their simplified forms, layered shapes and geometric perspective create a contemporary interpretation of the local environment, while small human details keep the compositions lively and approachable.
The colour palette draws from the Heraklion Development Agency identity, reworked in brighter combinations to give each scene its own character. A classic red pickup truck appears throughout the different illustrations, creating a recurring visual thread and adding a subtle playful element to the publication.
The layout was built around the presentation of projects, each combining visual material with a substantial amount of standardised information and project-specific details. A flexible grid system was developed not simply as a visual framework, but as a tool for organising and navigating content. Repeated structures make information easy to scan and compare, while variations in scale and composition prevent the pages from becoming too rigid or repetitive.
To balance the more information-dense sections, chapter introductions and image-led spreads use large typography and monochromatic treatments in earthy tones derived from the existing palette. These shifts in scale, colour and rhythm create visual pauses throughout the book and bring a warmer character to the overall editorial system.
Alongside the printed publication, Lazy snail created a 16:9 interactive PDF edition designed for easier on-screen reading.
The editorial system was adapted to the digital format, with an interactive menu providing direct access to each chapter and making navigation through the e-book faster and more intuitive.
