IPOS
The International Platform for Ocean Sustainability
A project by the Ocean Sustainability Foundation, IPOS brings diverse forms of knowledge and experience together to accelerate meaningful Ocean Action. Officially endorsed recently, as a Contribution to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, it forms part of a global movement advancing ocean knowledge and sustainability.
Building visibility through strategic communication
As IPOS entered a new phase of visibility and engagement, Lazy snail was tasked with shaping its communication strategy and planning. The work focused on articulating its role, balancing scientific insight with cultural and human perspectives, and creating a consistent editorial rhythm. This gave the team a stronger foundation for coordinating activity, connecting with its international network, and encouraging wider participation.
Creating structure through sub-identities
During the planning process, we identified the need for a clear structure that could organise IPOS’s expanding content calendar. We defined six core categories: Action Request, Rapid Response, Ocean Catalyst, People, Process, and Events, giving each its own sub-logo and colour palette. This system allows audiences to recognise content streams at a glance, understand how they relate to IPOS’s broader work, and navigate its output with greater ease.
Extending the visual language
Art direction established a consistent look and feel for illustration and photography, supported by a comprehensive library of custom icons that translated complex ideas into accessible forms. The concept extended across social profiles and posts, newsletter and web banners, digital flyers, infographics, white papers, virtual backgrounds, and editable reports. Presentation templates and communication materials completed a practical toolkit, equipping the team to work coherently across channels and audiences.

MOSAIC
As part of our outreach and relationship-building work, we collaborated with IPOS to define and visualise the core narrative of MOSAIC (Meaningful Ocean Spatial Planning and Inclusive Co-design), an Action Request supporting a whole-of-society approach to marine spatial planning in South Africa. The symbol reshapes familiar curved forms from IPOS into a colourful mosaic, preserving continuity while giving the initiative its own character. Its palette draws on colours selected by workshop participants, while subtle references to traditional Shweshwe fabric ground the design in its South African context.
