Inspired by the charmingly magical novel "Mr. Vertigo" by Paul Auster, boutique wine and spirit store Mr. Vertigo is located in the exclusive Kolonaki area in Athens.
We were asked to build on the existing logo and the visual identity of the brand. This allowed for flexible use of the design so that it could be applied to the different materials needed for the store's services and events.
Keeping the black and white aesthetics and the 1930s American style, the logo's wine bottle features in all applications in various versions, always in line with the concept of "magic."
After creating Mr. Vertigo's visual identity, we were asked to create a gift box catalog (print and digital) for the store's corporate customers. There were several points to keep in mind. We had to stick with the black and white aesthetics and the 1930s American style and stay in line with the concept of "magic." We also had to accommodate the client's need for a flexible format that would allow them to shuffle the content, without having to reshoot every time or edit any spread for a reprint of the catalog.
Sounds easy right?
Having to face a number of technical challenges, we designed a workflow that produced an image archive with flexible elements, allowing for the quick production of a very high number of unique composite images. The archive includes shots of wine and spirit bottles (all translucent except for the red wines) and naive chalk sketches, referring to elements in the story of Mr. Vertigo.
Each spread of the catalog has a snapshot feel and presents one to six bottles, along with information about the products, the corresponding gift box, and chalk sketches, on a patinated chalkboard. Selected quotes from "Mr. Vertigo" appear on the opposite pages, completing the sense of magic, so prevalent in the book. Magic and wine, what's not to like?
