Orea Kriti is an educational programme inviting visitors to explore farms across Crete, connecting agricultural life with learning and cultural awareness. While the original initiative addressed farm owners and educational institutions, this extension focuses on Educational Activities for primary school children, designed for ages 4–7.
Lazy snail created a set of playful, hands-on learning materials that introduce young pupils to rural life, sustainability, and local heritage, challenging enough to spark curiosity, yet light, tactile, and engaging across all applications.
Through research spanning books, articles, and interviews, we explored the everyday realities of the shepherd’s life, from routines and tools to landscapes, animals, and food production, forming the foundation of The Shepherd’s Book. The content introduces both traditional and contemporary aspects of a shepherd's life through short texts, visual cues, and hands-on activities, allowing children to grasp complex ideas through familiarity, repetition, and play.

The visual identity builds on selected elements from the original woodcut-inspired illustrations of Orea Kriti, refined into a more contemporary, child-friendly language. Simplified forms, reduced detail, and stronger contrasts improve legibility for young audiences, while maintaining a clear connection to folk imagery and local tradition.
These old, cut-out illustrations form the backbone of the system, supported by a vibrant yet balanced colour palette that helps differentiate themes and materials. Large, expressive typography acts both as a navigational tool and a visual anchor across formats, creating rhythm and clarity throughout the content.
The project took shape as a modular educational system centred around The Shepard's Book, supported by a floor game with interactive cards, an educator’s guide, and large double-sided posters. Designed for movement, observation, storytelling, and collaboration, the system encourages hands-on discovery while giving educators the flexibility to adapt activities to different learning rhythms. A key element is the visual comparison between the traditional and contemporary shepherd, highlighting continuity and change in everyday practices.
